Our 7th annual youth basketball camp at Howland United Methodist Church brought together 70 students from kindergarten through 8th grade for a weekend of fundamental skill-building and character development. Participants focused on mastering basketball basics while learning essential life lessons regarding leadership, encouragement, and giving their best effort.

What Happens on Day One of Youth Basketball Camp?

The first day of any sports program is always filled with a unique blend of nervous energy and high-speed excitement. For our 7th annual camp, Day 1 was all about setting the foundation—both on the court and in the hearts of our young athletes. With 70 kids arriving from across Trumbull County and beyond, our primary goal was to foster an environment where every child felt welcome, seen, and ready to learn.

We kicked things off by focusing on the formation of new friendships. In a minimally competitive environment like ours, the social aspect of sports is just as important as the physical one. Kids from different schools and grades were grouped together, encouraging them to step outside their comfort zones and meet new peers. We believe that a strong team starts with a strong community, and seeing these new bonds form during the very first water break is always a highlight for our coaching staff.

On the technical side, Day 1 was dedicated to baseline skills and fundamental drills. We spent time on:

skills, we introduced our core spiritual theme for the day: honoring God by giving our best effort. We discussed how “giving your best” doesn’t necessarily mean being the best person on the court; it means putting in 100% of the energy and focus you have available that day. This mindset shifts the focus from comparing oneself to others toward personal growth and integrity.

How Do We Motivate Young Players?

Day 2 was particularly special as we shifted our focus. Motivating children at this age requires a different approach than coaching teenagers. For these little athletes, the game needs to be engaging, high-energy, and, most importantly, rooted in positive reinforcement.

Our central lesson for Day 2 was about motivating others to do good by being encouraging. We taught the kids that their words have power. On the basketball court, a simple “nice pass!” or a high-five after a missed shot can completely change the atmosphere of a drill. We want our campers to understand that they are not just players; they are influencers within their peer groups.

The Role of Encouragement in Fundamentals

Teaching the fundamentals of basketball to young players involves a lot of repetition. To keep them engaged, we use encouragement as a primary coaching tool. Instead of focusing on the ball that rolled away, we celebrate the correct stance or the effort made to follow through on a shot. This approach aligns with our

By the end of the second day, it was clear that the message was sinking in. We witnessed older kids helping the younger ones find their spots in line, and peers cheering for each other during dribbling races. This culture of encouragement is what sets our program apart in the North East Ohio region. We aren't just building better players; we are building better teammates who understand the value of lifting others up.

What Does Leadership Look Like in Basketball?

By Day 3, the intensity of the camp naturally increased. We moved into more rigorous drills and introduced actual gameplay scenarios. This transition provided the perfect backdrop for our most important lesson of the week: Leadership.

In many sports circles, leadership is equated with being the highest scorer or the loudest voice on the floor. At our camp, we define leadership differently. We taught our players that great leaders are those who serve others. A leader is the person who picks up the equipment after practice, the one who ensures every teammate knows the play, and the one who prioritizes the team’s success over personal glory.

To put these leadership concepts into practice, Day 3 featured drills designed to test both physical stamina and mental discipline. The kids participated in:

During gameplay, coaches looked for moments of “servant leadership.” When a player gave up an open shot to pass to a teammate who hadn't scored yet, that was highlighted. When a player demonstrated excellent sportsmanship after a foul, that was celebrated. These moments are the true benchmarks of our program’s success. We encourage all families to review our

As we concluded our 7th annual basketball camp, the feedback from parents and the 70 participating kids was overwhelmingly positive. Many families in North East Ohio are looking for an alternative to the high-stress, “win-at-all-costs” culture of modern youth sports. Our focus on fundamentals and character development provides a refreshing change of pace.

Our program is more than just a place to play games; it is a community-driven initiative designed to help children grow both on and off the field. By focusing on a "minimally competitive" atmosphere, we ensure that every child, regardless of their skill level, feels valued and encouraged. This approach allows us to teach the basics of various sports while embedding core values like honesty, respect, and perseverance into every practice and game.

In North East Ohio, families are often looking for activities that balance physical health with positive social interactions. Our sports ministry meets this need by providing a safe space for kids to be active without the high-pressure environment found in many travel leagues. We believe that by teaching a child how to correctly swing a bat or dribble a ball, we are also opening a door for them to learn about character and the love of their community.
